battery_trouble_winterCold temperatures can make your vehicle act like a lot of things could be wrong.  Sometimes the battery is the last thing checked, but the first on the problem list.

During winter, due to freezing and below freezing temperatures, it slows the chemical reaction inside of the battery, wreaking havoc. Though batteries can function under a plethora of conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade the quality of your battery and may even render some batteries useless.

Your vehicle’s battery loses 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50 percent of its power when the temperature falls below zero.

Avoid Battery Problems
At Sierra Care Care and MST Tire Center we offer a STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEM CHECK that can provide valuable insight for your entire starting system.

The starting and charging system is responsible for getting an engine to run and for keeping different components charged. Using energy from the battery, the starter uses a gear to interact with the engine. Without a starter, an engine would be inoperable. The starting system involves a number of parts, including:

  • Ignition Switch
  • Starter
  • Flywheel

The charging system play’s an equally important role, which includes:

  • Battery
  • Alternator
  • Voltage Regulator

The battery is needed to send electricity to the starter. The alternator powers all the electrical components by generating electrical currents, and the voltage regulator ensures that the output of the alternator does not over- or under-charge the components dependent on the electrical current. Together, the starting and charging systems interact with one another to keep a vehicle operating for its driver.

Starting & Charging System Check offered at Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center
The various components that make up your starting and charging system are not impervious to failure from constant use and wear. Warning signs for a starting and charging system problem include:

  • Dashboard Warning Lights
  • Dim Headlights
  • Clicking or Growling Noises
  • Trouble Starting Engine
  • Inconsistent Idle

During a starting and charging system service, our staff will review the voltage level of your battery, test your alternator, and look over your starter. An inefficient starting and charging system can lead to engine failure, which makes routine maintenance extremely important. Some components, like the battery, may give little warning before they fail. Our service staff combines the proper tools with extensive automotive knowledge to test and repair the components of your vehicle’s starting and charging system.

So, give Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers a call at 1-775-525-2420 to schedule your Starting & Charging System Check.

COMMON FACTORS OF BATTERY FAILURE

Battery Age
If the battery is more than five years old and there’s any sign of struggle to start the car, get it replaced. A battery has an average lifespan of four years under “normal” conditions. “Normal” in this case means the battery goes through full charge cycles, isn’t subjected to extreme temperatures, is attached to a reliable and consistent charging system and isn’t providing power for a ton of accessories. See, normal just isn’t normal. In the real world, temperature extremes, vibration, short trips down the street and an ever-increasing array of MP3 players, GPS receivers and other devices take a toll on the battery. Getting your battery replaced when you know it is the problem is better than as a roadside emergency.

Corrosion on Battery Terminals
Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep the connections clean. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed using a toothbrush and baking soda and also make sure the battery is correctly seated. Excessive vibration/moving can cause a weaker connection as well.

Battery Load
Switch off everything electrical and dip the clutch to reduce the load on the battery when you start a cold car. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the electrical systems. When you park for the evening check to make sure all electrical items have been switched off – even an interior light, boot light, or radio left on overnight can kill a battery when it’s cold.

If you do not own a load tester, our staff would be happy to test the load of your battery and provide recommendations depending on the result of the test.

Install Battery Blanket or Trickle Charger to Prolong Battery Life
If you mostly do short journeys or leave the car standing for days at a time, invest in a modern battery conditioner/intelligent charger. These can be left connected to the battery indefinitely and can prolong its life without overcharging it.

A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fit inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fluid from freezing. A trickle charger can also be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the vehicle is off to keep it from freezing.

If your vehicle will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off. If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored.

Winterization Checklist
To maximize protection against cold-weather conditions, now’s the time to make sure you not only winterize your battery, but your vehicle too. Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers recommend that you have one of our ASE Certified technician’s inspect the following items on your vehicle for a safe winter:

  • Replace worn windshield wipers every 12 months.
  • Check all fluids.
  • Make sure the heater and defroster are in good working condition.
  • Inspect all bulbs and lights for proper operation.
  • Check condition of tires, including the spare.
  • Change oil every 3,000 miles.
  • Examine exhaust system for leaks.
  • Flush and refill cooling system with a 50/50 mixture.
  • Check drive belts, clamps and hoses.
  • Starting & charging system check.

If you live in an extremely cold region of the country, we recommend you carry emergency gear in your vehicle at all times, such as:

  • Gloves
  • Boots
  • Tire Chains
  • Battery Booster Pack
  • Cell Phone
  • Blankets
  • Flares
  • Flashlight
  • High-Energy, Non-Perishable Snacks

As the mornings have grown colder, I’ve noticed my heater isn’t putting out hot air. With winter approaching, I’d like to get this fixed soon.

Cold-Mornings-Car

The method used to warm a car’s cabin isn’t very different from the one used to keep the engine cool. In fact, it’s all hooked together and runs on the same circuit. Coolant circulates through the engine and absorbs engine heat, which is exchanged with the outside air by way of the radiator. A much smaller radiator called the heater core uses the same hot coolant to keep the cabin toasty. In general, there are two things that can go wrong with this setup.

Here are the two main culprits of reduced heat output in your vehicle’s cabin:

1) The first item to check is the engine temperature. To help cold engines warm up fast, the flow of coolant is restricted by way of the thermostat—a thermal valve that opens when it’s hot and closes when it’s cold. When the thermostat wears out, it remains stuck open or shut, which leads to either overheating or cool operation.

A worn-out thermostat might be preventing the coolant from getting warm enough to heat the cabin. Replacing the thermostat can be a 20-minute job or a real hassle. Check your service manual to see how involved the replacement is or stop by any of our 5 convenient locations in the Reno-Sparks area.

2) If the thermostat is fine, the flow of coolant in the heater core may be restricted by built-up goop. Sediment and grime can accumulate between coolant changes and collect in the heater core.

A flush can be done by disconnecting the heater hoses at the water pump (when the car is cold) and using compressed air to push the coolant and gunk backward, out the inlet hose. Be sure to capture all the old coolant and dispose of it properly. Follow that with a few rounds of filling the core with tap water and flushing it out in the same way, then refill the core with mixed coolant and reattach the hoses. None of these fixes are hard, but the heater-core flush is messy, so you might want to take your car to a shop for service.

Properly maintaining the cooling system is key for the heating system of your vehicle to work efficiently. Having the coolant in your engine flushed regularly and re-filled with the clean coolant/water mix is very important along with repairing any leaks that occur in your cooling system. We recommend having your cooling/heating system inspected on a regular basis with each oil change, so that you are aware of any issues and can have them repaired while they are still small.

To schedule an appointment for a FREE COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION good until 9/31/14, or regular service, please visit any of our 5 full service repair stores:

Sierra Car Care Locations

flat-tireLet’s take a look at some of the most common roadside emergencies drivers may face.

So, You Have a Flat Tire…
Are you prepared for this? Maybe you ran over a nail at a friends house, or a jagged rock on a dirt road… flat tires happen. But the important thing to think about is: Are you prepared for a flat tire, should it happen to you?

We are in the heaviest part of the travel season and good tires matter, especially with climbing temperatures across the U.S. The last thing you need is less than satisfactory tires when you may or may not have family members with you.

  • Always check tire pressure before any extended driving trips.
  • Make sure you have sufficient tire tread for the trip on or off-road. Try the penny test to measure tire tread. This is especially important for RVs, Campers and Tow Trailers. Search our online tire warehouse for all your tire needs: MST Tire Center | Tire Warehouse

Quick Solutions For a Flat Tire
Important items you will need to repair your flat tire:

  • Spare Tire / Donut
  • Jack
  • Lug Nut Bar

If you are missing any of these items, you had better call a tow truck. (It is recommended to check your spare tire each month and keep it properly inflated as well, so it’s ready to go when you need it most.)

If you have a nail stuck in your tire, leave it in, until you are somewhere you can either get a tire plug kit (temporary fix) or get your vehicle to a tire repair shop.

Is Your Vehicle Leaking Antifreeze?
Did you get ready to leave only to find a puddle of green below you vehicle? You may have a leak in your radiator. This can cause over-heating, reduced engine performance, and ultimately engine failure if not properly taken care of.

Cars are not supposed to leak antifreeze, also known as engine coolant. The fluid runs from different parts of the engine to others and is always contained. If you see this greenish fluid on the ground or other engine parts, something is broken or split and must be repaired or replaced.

If you are not a trained mechanic even the quick-search remedies online may not help, you may want to see a car care professional, preferably an ASE Certified Technician

Smoke Coming From Under the Hood? This could be caused by a few different things, oil on your engine, accidently leaving the oil cap off and driving, blown head gasket, over-heating radiator, etc. Maybe you took your vehicle to one of those “Express” oil change service stations, and they got oil all over your engine?

There are a number of reasons this may happen, but if you car doesn’t start after cooling and maybe adding some water to the radiator… you may want to get your vehicle towed to the nearest service station.

Did You Turn the Key in the Ignition Only to Find that Nothing Works and Your Engine Won’t Start?

If you are having trouble starting your engine, visit us for a battery replacement service. We will determine if the battery is the cause of the problem and in need of replacement.

If your battery has low voltage, it may just be time for a replacement. On average, a battery will last 3-5 years, but driving habits and exposure to extreme elements can shorten the life of your car battery.

If your battery is good, then you may need an inspection on your engine starter and/or electrical system.

These are just a few of the most common roadside emergencies drivers face on the road. If you find yourself in need of an expert opinion for you vehicle, just come on by and we’ll take care of you.

Save Money at The Pump at Sierra CAr CAreThe summer heat is fast approaching and so are rising gas prices.

A few simple and inexpensive vehicle maintenance steps can stretch your dollar at the pump and even help protect the environment. With 5 local, full service gas stations in the Reno and Sparks Nevada area, our advisement for gas savings may be worth reading.

What many motorists don’t realize is that fuel consumption is directly related to vehicle maintenance and can impact the amount of gasoline your vehicle uses. Gas prices can climb quickly, but the good news is that you have some control. By properly maintaining your vehicle, you can improve fuel economy while saving money.

Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center would like to encourage motorists to be car care aware and perform regular vehicle maintenance to improve fuel economy.

  1. Gas Cap
Damaged, loose or missing gas caps allow gas to vaporize into the air.
  2. Tune-Up
Keep your vehicle running properly and improve gas mileage by an average of 4%.
  3. Motor Oil
Improve gas mileage by 1 – 2% by using the grade of motor oil recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Air Filters
Replacing clogged air filters on older vehicles can improve fuel economy and will improve performance and acceleration on all vehicles.
  5. Tire Pressure
Keep tires properly inflated and improve gas mileage by up to 3.3%.
  6. Fix It
Addressing a serious maintenance problem, like a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve mileage by as much as 40 percent, according to www.fueleconomy.gov.

In addition to vehicle maintenance, modifying driving habits, such as observing the speed limit and avoiding quick stops and starts, can also increase fuel efficiency. Consolidating trips, avoiding excessive idling and removing unnecessary items from the trunk are also easy ways to lower fuel consumption.

Since 1975, Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center’s have proudly been providing fast, friendly and reliable service along with Quality Guaranteed Auto Repair. If you would like to find out more, please visit SierraCarCare.com for more information.

vp-racing-fuelSierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers is proud to offer VP Racing Fuel. We sell 100 Octane unleaded at our pumps at our Sparks location for Street Performance vehicles including luxury cars and sports cars, collector cars, street motorcycles, etc.  We also sell packaged VP Racing fuel with higher octane for off road vehicles at all of our locations.

When you crave the most power, best performance and must-have fuel consistency, you need VP Racing Fuels.

Why? Because performance fuel is our passion, our lifeblood. It’s not a sideline or hobby, it’s not one department or profit center in a large conglomerate. Since 1975, it’s been the primary focus of everything we do.

And it’s not just “race gas.” It’s performance fuels of all types—racing gasoline, racing methanol, nitromethane, small engine fuels, hobby fuels, storage fuels—essentially any application requiring custom formulation for specific performance characteristics. And the pump gas you’ll find at VP-branded stations? In keeping with VP’s demanding standards, you can be confident it ranks with the best on the market.

Obsessive R&D
VP’s singular focus is reflected in our obsessive dedication to R&D. Our technological developments set us apart from every other racing fuel manufacturer. What other company would focus on developing formulas for even the smallest niches in racing—to the tune of nearly 70 blends?

While VP Racing owns and operates a fully equipped analytical laboratory, we spend most of our time working with racers in their shops, on their dynos and with their vehicles at the track. We’re actively involved in our customers’ success. That’s how most of our blends came about—in response to specific customers’ requests for help. Most of us are racers as well, so we like the thrill of competition. And we like to win.

“World Leading Technology” is a bold claim.
But the facts speak for themselves—in volumes. As if nearly 70 blends weren’t enough, VP has introduced more fuels this year that set new standards for performance in powersports, off-season storage and other applications. And you can expect the technological advancements from VP’s lab to keep on coming.

It’s about winning.
Technology aside, racing is about winning. And the fact is, in racing not subject to fuel rule restrictions, VP fuels more winners than any American fuel company. Consider the NHRA Pro Stock Champions who have made VP their fuel of choice for 34 consecutive years. Or the VP-powered AMA Pro Racing motorcyclists who swept most of the Pro Class Championships over the last decade. Or the Champions of the American LeMans series, who rely on VP to fuel some of the most technologically advanced cars in racing. Even the Champions of the Reno Air Races, where VP fuels the world’s fastest piston-powered airplanes.

So besides winning, what’s behind VP’s passion to stay on the leading edge of performance? It’s a recognition that we’re manufacturing performance parts. And our performance parts can mean the difference between winning and losing.

Race fuel is a performance part.

That’s right—fuel is a performance part, as critical to your program as a camshaft or piston. A race vehicle is nothing more than a collection of parts. And to have a winning race vehicle, you need the best parts—and that includes racing fuel. Racing fuel that is specifically designed to optimize performance in your application, according to your requirements and your fuel rules.

The most cost effective performance gains you can buy.
Because you presumably race to win, you know winning usually requires the best parts—and you get what you pay for.

Formulating race fuel is challenging and complex. Recognizing that race fuel is a performance part, VP seeks out and uses only the best components. And the components that yield the best results are expensive. That’s why VP’s fuels are typically not inexpensive. VP fuels are premium products manufactured with premium components. We take no shortcuts. If you see a lower price on another race fuel, your first question should be “what shortcuts were taken in its production” and “what am I risking or sacrificing as a result?”

vp100-barrelPrice vs. Performance
We encourage you to weigh the price of VP’s fuels against the quality and performance gains they deliver. We’re confident you’ll find they’re among the most cost-effective parts in your arsenal.

As an example, if you switch a drag car from a generic 116 octane fuel to VP’s Q16, you can pick up 30 Hp (and sometimes more) in a 550 in. engine and a .03-.05 gain in your 1/8 mile ET. Even if you’re paying $3 more per pass for Q16, that’s the cheapest horsepower you can buy!

Or say you switch your circle track car from a “standard” 110 fuel to VP113. You’ll find it makes more power, offers better throttle response, burns cleaner and your engine runs cooler. And because it runs cooler, you’ll maintain power through the longest races and harshest conditions. Considering what you spend on your engine, isn’t it worth $1-2 extra per gallon to not only improve your chances of winning but also protect your investment?
