flat-tireLet’s take a look at some of the most common roadside emergencies drivers may face.

So, You Have a Flat Tire…
Are you prepared for this? Maybe you ran over a nail at a friends house, or a jagged rock on a dirt road… flat tires happen. But the important thing to think about is: Are you prepared for a flat tire, should it happen to you?

We are in the heaviest part of the travel season and good tires matter, especially with climbing temperatures across the U.S. The last thing you need is less than satisfactory tires when you may or may not have family members with you.

  • Always check tire pressure before any extended driving trips.
  • Make sure you have sufficient tire tread for the trip on or off-road. Try the penny test to measure tire tread. This is especially important for RVs, Campers and Tow Trailers. Search our online tire warehouse for all your tire needs: MST Tire Center | Tire Warehouse

Quick Solutions For a Flat Tire
Important items you will need to repair your flat tire:

  • Spare Tire / Donut
  • Jack
  • Lug Nut Bar

If you are missing any of these items, you had better call a tow truck. (It is recommended to check your spare tire each month and keep it properly inflated as well, so it’s ready to go when you need it most.)

If you have a nail stuck in your tire, leave it in, until you are somewhere you can either get a tire plug kit (temporary fix) or get your vehicle to a tire repair shop.

Is Your Vehicle Leaking Antifreeze?
Did you get ready to leave only to find a puddle of green below you vehicle? You may have a leak in your radiator. This can cause over-heating, reduced engine performance, and ultimately engine failure if not properly taken care of.

Cars are not supposed to leak antifreeze, also known as engine coolant. The fluid runs from different parts of the engine to others and is always contained. If you see this greenish fluid on the ground or other engine parts, something is broken or split and must be repaired or replaced.

If you are not a trained mechanic even the quick-search remedies online may not help, you may want to see a car care professional, preferably an ASE Certified Technician

Smoke Coming From Under the Hood? This could be caused by a few different things, oil on your engine, accidently leaving the oil cap off and driving, blown head gasket, over-heating radiator, etc. Maybe you took your vehicle to one of those “Express” oil change service stations, and they got oil all over your engine?

There are a number of reasons this may happen, but if you car doesn’t start after cooling and maybe adding some water to the radiator… you may want to get your vehicle towed to the nearest service station.

Did You Turn the Key in the Ignition Only to Find that Nothing Works and Your Engine Won’t Start?

If you are having trouble starting your engine, visit us for a battery replacement service. We will determine if the battery is the cause of the problem and in need of replacement.

If your battery has low voltage, it may just be time for a replacement. On average, a battery will last 3-5 years, but driving habits and exposure to extreme elements can shorten the life of your car battery.

If your battery is good, then you may need an inspection on your engine starter and/or electrical system.

These are just a few of the most common roadside emergencies drivers face on the road. If you find yourself in need of an expert opinion for you vehicle, just come on by and we’ll take care of you.

what is a brake system flush? It is easy to ignore repairs for your vehicle when they do not seem necessary. Really, what is the importance of a brake system flush? When your mechanic recommends that you get your brake system flushed, do you think you should you do it or save the cash?

Get it done.

When put simply, having clean brake fluid in your brake system is as necessary for your vehicle as oil is to your engine, the lifeblood of the system.

Over time, the rubber valves in the master brake cylinder, calipers and wheel cylinders deteriorate and create debris in your brake fluid. Moisture and air can also get trapped in the system. Brake fluid naturally wears down over time as well because of excessive heat and pressure, which leads to rust, that can create more nasty bits in your brake fluid. With no brake fluid, or with excessively worn out fluid, the brakes will not work properly, putting you and your vehicle in danger.

With a brake system flush, the hydraulic fluid in the brake reservoir, lines, and other parts of the system will be removed and replaced with fresh fluid. Bleeding the brakes only involves removing some of the fluid to remove air bubbles that develop over time.

Brake fluid does not need changed as often as your oil, but is important and can be added onto your next scheduled maintenance visit. Our ASE certified technicians recommend to change your vehicles brake fluid every 30,000 miles.

This month Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers is offering a FREE Courtesy Brake Inspection for your vehicle.  The inspection includes: Front/Rear Pads, Shoes, Rotors, Drums, Hydraulic System, & Test Drive. Please call to schedule your next maintenance with Sierra Car Care, the mechanics that care about the health of your vehicle, and your safety. LOCATIONS

1Driver safety is a priority in rough weather conditions and starts with having the right equipment for your vehicle. When driving in the snow and ice, you may want to think about some extra tire protection, like; snow chains or snow cables.

What is the difference between Snow Chains vs. Snow Cables for your tires? Is one better than the other?

Although snow chains and snow cables perform a similar job, there are several differences between them, enough to affect which one you should ultimately choose:

  • Snow Chains are made of large and heavy steel links and are often used for 2WD vehicles. Although snow cables are effective, snow chains seem to provide more traction.
  • Snow Cables are made of steel aircraft cable, encased in alloy traction coils, and are often used for 4WD vehicles. Due to their makeup, snow cables are lighter in weight than snow chains and are easier to apply/remove. They are also less expensive than snow chains.

To find out if your tires can be equipped with chains, check your vehicle’s maintenance or owner’s manual to verify that it contains no warnings advising against the installation of snow chains.

Some cars and trucks have very little clearance between the tire and other internal components, which may restrict your options to cables only.

If you have any questions or would like assistance shopping for snow chains or cables, please see a location near you and one of our Tire Specialists  will be happy to help you.

VP_Racing_Fuels_100_OctaneYou get to the gas pump and typically see three choices for fueling, but what is the difference?

Regular, Regular Plus (mid-grade), and premium gasoline grades are all distinguished by their octane level. Octane rating or octane number is a standard measure of the performance of a motor fuel. The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can endure before detonating. The lower the octane level, the easier the gasoline will burn.

Difference in Octane Numbers Make the Grade
Regular grade gasoline has an octane rating between 85 and 88, with the average being 87. Regular Plus gasoline has an octane rating of 88 to 90, with the average being 89. Premium grade gasoline has an octane rating that is larger than 90, with an average being 92. These three types of gasoline are typically what you see at the gas pump.

100 Octane At The Pump!
Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers Pyramid and Prater location in Sparks, NV carries 100 octane gasoline AT THE PUMP! Our 5 locations in the Reno and Sparks area all carry packaged VP Racing Fuels for purchase as well. 100 octane is specifically engineered for high-performance street vehicles including luxury sports cars, muscle cars, street rods, tuner cars, sport bikes, cruisers and more. Oxygenated with ethanol, this CARB-legal fuel is environmentally friendly and street legal (in most areas). Oxygenated with ethanol, VP100 significantly outperforms premium grade unleaded pump gas.

If your Owner’s Manual Recommends Premium Gasoline, Use It!
You might damage your vehicles engine if you try to save money by using low grade fuel. At the same time, using higher octane gas than your car requires costs you more money and provides no additional benefit for your engine. It is important to fuel your car with whatever fuel grade is recommended.

Standard-performing vehicles are outfitted to use the correct amount of compression to eliminate internal combustion pings, usually requiring Regular Unleaded gasoline. Sports vehicles, or high-performance cars, benefit from mid-grade to premium gasoline because their engines were built for higher fuel compression for additional driving power. Please see your owner’s manual for more details about what gasoline grade your vehicle requires. You may find it worth the time!

Here comes Winter and with it comes weather that can change quickly. We are here to help you be prepared and stay safe.

Jeep_Wrangler_on_snow_1949For this region, we recommend drivers consider replacing their Summer or All-Season tires with Winter or Snow tires, now. Plus, at Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center all new tire purchases are guaranteed for 3 years or 36,000 miles by warranty*.

Don’t be left out in the cold, shop for tires today!exclusive_3-years_36000_mile_warranty-01

Our Winter tires use softer compounds and dedicated tread patterns to provide better traction and performance once the roads are covered in snow.

  • Winter tires perform well on all winter road conditions, not just ice, like studded snow tires.
  • Snow tires stop faster than any other type of tire on ice in freezing temperatures.

Are you debating between a Winter Tire vs. Snow Tire? We’ve got you covered.

Enter for your chance to win $1,000 for completing a tire survey, just shop for tires here. The rules and regulations are detailed.
