ASE Blue Seal of Excellence
One way to determine if a repair shop is qualified to maintain and repair your vehicle is the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence. It should be proudly displayed, as this achievement is not easy to accomplish.
What is the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence?
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (or ASE) is an independent, non-profit organization that tests and certifies auto repair & service professionals. Since 1972 ASE has worked to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals and providing certification for many facets of automotive service.
Certification in a given category requires passing an exam and two years relevant work experience. For example, an ASE Master Technician shall have passed exams in each of eight categories (Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission, Manual Transmission and Drive Trains, Suspension & Steering, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Heating & Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance) and have two years experience servicing each of those systems.
How Does ASE Certification Help Gain Trust?
Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center’s ASE Certification promotes our dedication to excellence in automotive repair and service. ASE certifies our automotive technician and service professionals, not the auto shop(s).
Why Does ASE Exist?
To protect the automotive service consumer, shop owner, and the automotive technician. ASE will test and certify automotive professionals so that shop owners and service customers can better gauge a technicians level of expertise before contracting the technician’s services. ASE certifies the automotive technician professional so they can offer tangible proof of their technical knowledge. ASE Certification testing means peace of mind for auto service managers, customers.
How Does ASE Certification Work?
In addition to passing an ASE Certification test, automotive technicians must have two years of on the job training or one year of on the job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair to qualify for certification.
The exams are not easy. Only two out of every three test-takers pass on their first attempt. To remain ASE certified, professionals must be retested every five years to keep up with advancements in automotive technology.

Driver safety is a priority in rough weather conditions and starts with having the right equipment for your vehicle. When driving in the snow and ice, you may want to think about some extra tire protection, like; snow chains or snow cables.
What is the difference between Snow Chains vs. Snow Cables for your tires? Is one better than the other?
Although snow chains and snow cables perform a similar job, there are several differences between them, enough to affect which one you should ultimately choose:
- Snow Chains are made of large and heavy steel links and are often used for 2WD vehicles. Although snow cables are effective, snow chains seem to provide more traction.
- Snow Cables are made of steel aircraft cable, encased in alloy traction coils, and are often used for 4WD vehicles. Due to their makeup, snow cables are lighter in weight than snow chains and are easier to apply/remove. They are also less expensive than snow chains.
To find out if your tires can be equipped with chains, check your vehicle’s maintenance or owner’s manual to verify that it contains no warnings advising against the installation of snow chains.
Some cars and trucks have very little clearance between the tire and other internal components, which may restrict your options to cables only.

GAS FOR GOODNESS: Supporting Our Community
Every Wednesday in October, we’ll make a donation to a local charity for every gallon of gas sold from our Sierra Car Care/MST Tire Centers. And we’ll donate $1.00 per tire sold each Saturday at MST Tire Center on Mill Street. All donations in October will support Northern Sierra Endurance Training (NSET).
NSET’s mission is to provide a venue for individuals to meet other people training for endurance events in the Truckee Meadows. By promoting the benefits of endurance sports, like walking and running, in the Truckee Meadows, NSET hopes to improve individual’s health and performance as a result of positive, supportive group association.
NSET is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting physical fitness through activity in the surrounding community. The organization strives to foster an environment of fellowship and good will and exemplify key attributes of being friendly, professional and morally supportive of other athletes goals and achievements, no matter their level of success.

We would like to formally say goodbye to the name Mill Street Tire and say hello to MST Tire Center. They are one-in-the-same tire warehouse, but the name changed when the new owner’s Steve & Laurie Yarborough added the company to the Sierra Car Care service station family.
Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Center are now serving the greater Reno-Sparks area with 5 full service auto repair and tire stores. This transition allowed for an opportunity to improve value and service to customers in the area.
You may still see Mill Street Tire on the wall (on-location), the change is slow. The goal is to let you know the name has changed, but the same great service and workmanship are still here. So come on down and see us at MST Tire Center at 3180 Mill Street in Reno, NV.
