Why switch oil viscosity? Save
August 31, 2013 in MST Tire Center and Sierra Car Care Newsletter, Offers & Promotions, Public Service, Vehicle Repair | Tags: ASE Certified Technicians, car problems, care tune-up, donate, fix my car, FREE oil change, inspection, local charities, Mill Street Tire Center, MST Tire Center, oil change, oil viscosity, Reno Nevada, Sierra Car Care, Sparks Nevada, travel | 1 comment
Does oil change with the weather?
Your engine depends on the free flow of oil through all working parts. When the weather gets colder your oil will thicken and take longer to flow between those moving parts, which may cause damage to and/or reduce the life of your engine.
When should I get an oil change?
You should change your oil when the weather begins to get colder or hotter by approx. 10-20 degrees. Motor oil thins as it heats and thickens as it cools. So, with the right additives to help it resist thinning too much, an oil can be rated for one viscosity when cold, and another for when it’s hot.
At Sierra Car Care and MST Tire Centers we recommended that you get an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles depending on the year and model of your vehicle. If you live in the city, with a more stop-and-go driving routine, we recommend a change every 2,000-3,000 miles.
Is oil important for the engine?
Without oil to lubricate and cool moving parts, keep them clean and help to seal the pistons in the cylinders, the engine would seize almost immediately. So, yes, oil is important.
After determining the correct viscosity, the next choice in motor oil is what type? Higher mileage blends can benefit engines over 75K miles. Synthetic blends and full synthetics can bring additional protection and often flow more easily during severe cold than conventional oils.
If you are not sure, just ask! We have trained professionals at all of our 5 locations in the Reno and Sparks area. We are more than happy to assist you, for appointments or walk-ups.

Share the Road: Tips for Safety
July 9, 2013 in MST Tire Center and Sierra Car Care Newsletter, Offers & Promotions, Public Service | Tags: ASE Certified Technicians, blind spots, car problems, care tune-up, donate, fix my car, inspection, local charities, Mill Street Tire Center, motorcycle, MST Tire Center, Reno Nevada, safety inspection, share the road, Sierra Car Care, Sparks Nevada, travel, wear a helmet | Leave a comment
During the summer months there are more vehicles traveling on the road, which includes motorcycles and bicyclists. Due to the heavier traffic during these months, safety becomes an issue, which is why every precaution should be taken when practicing safe driving.
Motorcyclists are at a huge risk while on the road, as their vehicles offer less stability, less protection, and they are less visible on the road. With more people in the United States riding motorcycles today than ever before, motorcyclist safety is an important public health concern.
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVER’S
Nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents are caused by a driver violating a motorcycle rider’s right-of-way, here are some tips for safe maneuvering:
- Stay back. When riding behind a motorcycle, increase your following distance. Leave an extra buffer zone for safety.
- Let them swerve. This is necessary for bikers to miss potholes and other road debris which may not seem important in a car, but can mean life or death for a biker.
- Double-check when turning. Please, look twice and save a life! If you are looking out for small vehicles, you are sure to see everything else.
- Share the road. Bikers can only do so much to protect themselves, so make a mental note to keep a look out for them.
- Practice defensive driving techniques when motorcycles are on the road.
Let’s keep our rider’s safe. They are our friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers. Follow these motorcycle safety tips, share the road, and please, drive safely!
SAFETY TIPS FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDER’S
When you ride your motorcycle, follow these tips to stay safe:
- Always wear a DOT-approved helmet.
- Watch your speed. Motorcycles accelerate the fastest of all vehicles, so exercise caution when passing other vehicles.
- Wear protective clothing. Leather clothing, boots with nonskid soles and gloves can protect your body from severe injuries. Upper body clothing should also have bright colors or reflective materials, so other motorists can see you more easily.
- Avoid tailgating and watch for driver’s blind spots.
- Maintain a safe speed and exercise caution when traveling over slippery surfaces or gravel.
- Always ride with your headlights on.
SAFETY INSPECTION
Before setting out on your journey, take a good look at your vehicle and/or motorcycle to ensure everything is in good running order. If you have any questions or concerns bring your vehicle into any of our Reno or Sparks locations for a FREE Vehicle Inspection. Includes: test antifreeze, battery, charging system, belts, hoses, fluids, and tires!

Is your vehicle travel ready?
May 31, 2013 in MST Tire Center and Sierra Car Care Newsletter, Offers & Promotions, Public Service, Vehicle Repair | Tags: ASE Certified Technicians, brake inspection, brakes, car care, care tune-up, Coolant System Flush, FREE Inspection, head lights, how to check tire tread, local charities, Mill Street Tire Center, MST Tire Center, nitrogen service, off-roading, oil change, prevent costly repairs, Reno Nevada, Sierra Car Care, Sparks Nevada, Tire Pressure, transmission, tune-up, windshield wipers, wiper blades | Leave a comment
Here are a few vehicle maintenance tips to keep your family on the road, while saving you money this summer.
Whether you choose to perform minor check-ups and repairs yourself or you prefer a professional mechanic look it over, here are a few tips that can keep you safe before you hit the road.
We want your journey to be as carefree as your vacation.
Tire Pressure
Check tire pressure to make sure all tires, including the spare, are properly inflated and have been rotated. You will benefit by getting higher gas mileage and a decreased chance of blowout.
Also, if your tires have been filled with nitrogen, we suggest re-filling with nitrogen as well. You can see our MST Tire Center (formerly known as Mill Street Tire) for Nitrogen Services.
Tire Tread
Check the tread depth of all your vehicle and trailer tires before you go.Put a penny in the tread and if you can’t see Lincoln, you are safe to hit the road. But if you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tire tread is likely too low.
You may need to invest in new tires before any long road trips or off-roading. Go to any of our 5 locations for new tire recommendations and check out our current tire specials here.
Brakes
Do your brakes squeak, squeal, or grind, or does your pedal feel “soft”? If the last inspection was more than 24,000 miles or 12 months ago, you may need your brakes inspected by a professional ASE certified technician.
Oil
Make sure the oil in your vehicle is filled up to the fill line and you can still “see through” it. An oil change is recommended every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. But, if the oil is black, that is usually an indication you need to change the oil and filter.
We offer a Buy one, Get one oil change FREE Deal. See the yellow coupon below for details.
Transmissions and Gear Boxes
Are you hauling a trailer or any toys, like; boats, ATVs, or motorcycles? You may want to check and/or change the transmission fluid in your vehicle before you make that long haul.
Lights and Windshield Wipers
Walk around the vehicle and make sure all lights are in working order and your light casings are clean. If your wiper blades are worn out, they may need replacing.

In many cases, early detection of engine or tire problems can be the difference between $ and $$$. Bring your vehicle into any of our Reno or Sparks locations for a FREE Vehicle Inspection. Includes: test antifreeze, battery, charging system, belts, hoses, fluids, and tires!

Coolant Flush: Why you need one
April 30, 2013 in MST Tire Center and Sierra Car Care Newsletter, Offers & Promotions, Public Service, Vehicle Repair | Tags: ASE Certified Technicians, car care, care tune-up, coolant, coolant flush, Coolant System Flush, Educate Foster Youth, FREE Inspection, local charities, Mill Street Tire Center, MST Tire Center, prevent costly repairs, Reno Nevada, Sierra Association of Foster Families, Sierra Car Care, Sparks Nevada, tune-up | Leave a comment
We’re often asked, “What’s a coolant flush, and do I really need one?”
In short, yes! Here’s why…
The name coolant is misleading because it does more than heat or cool your engine, and protect your engine from freezing in the winter.
Coolant keeps your car running and prevents expensive bills like replacing radiators, head gaskets, and heater cores.
These repairs could run you $400 -$1500. But a simple coolant flush done every 2-5 years can help you avoid those high bills.
How Coolant Works
Today’s engines run hotter than older cars. And to meet government fuel mileage regulations, manufacturers make most engine parts out of aluminum. This includes your cooling system, radiator, and heater core.
The problem is, aluminum corrodes easily, especially when heated. So, our hotter-running cars mixed with aluminum parts combine to break down your engine coolant faster.
Engine coolant contains inhibitors that protect metals from eroding and corroding. It does this by raising the boiling point and lowering the freezing point of your engine’s cooling system.
So, just like the carton of milk in your refrigerator, engine coolant breaks down over time and needs changing.
When Should I Change My Coolant?
If you want to avoid hefty car repair bills, change your coolant regularly. It’s best to have a professional check your coolant and recommend your next change.
So come into any of our 5 full service auto repair stations in the local Reno Sparks area to have one of our ASE certified technicians give you
a FREE Vehicle Inspection.

The mission of the Solace Tree is that all children, teens and their family members have the freedom to express their feelings associated with death in a safe and loving environment. Our peer support programs and educational opportunities help children and teens learn to cope and adjust to the changes in their lives.
In 2002, while teaching at an elementary school and finishing his Masters degree in school counseling, Emilio Parga discovered he had cancer. He was also assisting students who had lost parents to suicide, accidental death and cancer. In his attempt to provide these children with emotional support, he realized that many kids and teenagers in Northern Nevada had lost a parent, sibling or caregiver throughout the year, and that there were no grief support programs for them. Knowing all too well a child or teen’s need for support when a family member or caregiver dies, Emilio decided there was no time to wait and he created the Solace Tree in 2004.
